New Course Offering at David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA for 2007-2008:

Course Title: INTEGRATIVE CANCER MEDICINE

Recent studies indicate that more than 80% of Americans diagnosed with cancer will use some form of complementary or alternative medical therapy. Overall, it is estimated that US healthcare consumers spend about $27 billion dollars per year on these alternative treatments.

This course program is intended to introduce students to current concepts and practices in integrative cancer medicine, with opportunities for both research and clinical experiences. Students will learn about methods used for the discovery of new anti-tumor therapeutics from natural sources and about new evidence-based approaches in clinical-translational research. In addition, students will participate on an inpatient palliative care service for patients with advanced malignancy and on several outpatient services emphasizing conventional as well as alternative and complementary medical practices in oncology. A core syllabus and list of recommended reading will be provided.
