Dr. Pietras is a clinician, researcher and educator with broad-based knowledge of comprehensive care in cancer medicine. Dr. Pietras focuses on clinical-translational (bench-to-bedside) research, and he has contributed more than 100 peer-reviewed publications based on laboratory and clinical trials findings. His research has been supported by grants from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Aging, DOD Breast Cancer Research Program, DOD Ovarian Cancer Research Program, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and the California Breast Cancer Research Program.
In 2002, Dr. Pietras became the founding Director of the Stiles Program in Integrative Oncology at UCLA, a novel Program intended, in part, to develop and test new antitumor therapies from natural sources. Dr. Pietras has received many awards for his work, including a Lilly Research Award, Goldman Award for Outstanding Clinical Performance, Upjohn Research Award, Genentech Independent Research Award, Wells Fargo Foundation Award, UCLA Faculty Research Award, a Research Career Development Award from the Stop Cancer Foundation, Innovation Award at California Breast Cancer Research Symposium, and a National Lung Cancer Partnership Research Award. He has also presented his work at numerous national and international scientific meetings, including distinguished ‘Meet the Professor’ sessions at the American Society for Clinical Oncology annual meetings. His scientific contributions have been important in clinical development of novel biologic therapies for patients with cancer, such as the antitumor antibody Herceptin. Dr. Pietras has several ongoing academic interests, including discovery of new antitumor medicines from natural sources, development of improved and safer ways to treat patients afflicted with malignancies, and the education of patients, as well as physicians in training and in practice, on the risks and benefits of complementary approaches in cancer management in the clinic.
